Altcoin season index

Is money chasing altcoins, or hiding in Bitcoin? One number: the share of the top 50 coins that have outperformed BTC over the past 90 days โ€” recalculated daily from our AUD market data.

Read it with dominance

This index and Bitcoin dominance are two views of the same rotation: when dominance falls, altcoin season readings usually rise. When they disagree, it's often stablecoins absorbing the flow โ€” money leaving Bitcoin without buying altcoins.

Chasing winners has a tax bill

Rotating between coins is a CGT event on every swap โ€” including crypto-to-crypto. Selling winners held under 12 months forfeits the 50% discount; our tax calculator shows what a rotation actually costs after tax.

FAQ

What is an "altcoin season"?

A stretch where money rotates out of Bitcoin into smaller coins, which then outperform it broadly โ€” the mirror of a "Bitcoin season", where BTC leads and altcoins bleed against it. The index makes the rotation measurable instead of vibes-based: it's simply the share of major altcoins beating Bitcoin over the trailing 90 days.

How is the index calculated?

We take the top 50 coins in our database by market cap, excluding stablecoins and tokenised gold, and measure each coin's AUD price change over the past 90 days against Bitcoin's. The index is the percentage of those altcoins outperforming BTC: 75%+ is conventionally called altcoin season, 25% or less Bitcoin season. It recalculates on every daily rebuild.

Is a high reading a signal to buy altcoins?

Treat it as a thermometer, not a trading signal. By the time a reading is extreme, much of the move has already happened โ€” altcoin seasons historically end abruptly, and smaller coins fall harder than Bitcoin when they do. Pair it with our Bitcoin dominance and Fear & Greed pages for context, not prediction.

Why does my number differ from other altseason indices?

Different sites use different coin baskets, exclusion rules and data sources, so readings differ by a few points. The direction and zone agree far more often than the exact number โ€” which is the part that carries the information.

Calculated from AUD prices in our market database (data by CoinGecko), top 50 coins excluding stablecoins and tokenised gold. A market thermometer, not financial advice or a trading signal.
