What is gas, and what is gwei?
Gas measures the computational work an Ethereum transaction needs; gwei is the unit its price is quoted in. One gwei is a billionth of an ETH (10⁻⁹). Your fee is roughly gas used × gas price: a simple transfer uses 21,000 gas, so at 10 gwei that's 0.00021 ETH.
Why do fees change so much?
Gas prices float with demand for block space — quiet nights can be under a few gwei, NFT mints and market panics have pushed hundreds. Complex actions (swaps, DeFi) also use several times more gas than simple transfers. The calculator lets you model any combination.
Do I pay gas when buying on an Australian exchange?
Not for trades within the platform — those happen on the exchange's internal ledger. Gas applies when you move crypto on-chain, like withdrawing ETH to your own wallet. Exchanges usually charge a fixed withdrawal fee that covers it.
