Dollar-cost averaging calculator

What would a fixed amount, invested on a schedule, actually have done? This backtest replays real AUD price history from our market database — including the honest comparison most DCA pages skip: what a single lump sum on day one would have returned instead.

FAQ

What is dollar-cost averaging?

Investing a fixed AUD amount on a fixed schedule — say $50 every week — regardless of price. You automatically buy more units when prices are low and fewer when they're high, and you remove the hardest part of investing: deciding when. Most Australian exchanges can automate it with recurring buys.

Is DCA better than investing a lump sum?

It depends entirely on what prices do next, which nobody knows. In steadily rising markets a lump sum invested earlier does better; in falling or sideways markets DCA's lower average cost wins — the backtest above shows both outcomes honestly for the period you pick. DCA's real advantage is behavioural: it keeps people invested without trying to time the market.

How accurate is this backtest?

It replays real daily AUD closing prices from our market database (data by CoinGecko) for the schedule you choose. It excludes exchange fees and spreads — on most platforms a recurring buy costs roughly 0.1–1% per order, which you can check on our fee comparison. Past performance is no indicator of future results.

Does each DCA purchase have tax consequences?

Buying crypto with AUD isn't a taxable event, but every purchase starts its own 12-month clock for the CGT discount, and each parcel has its own cost base when you eventually sell. Good record-keeping matters — crypto tax software handles parcel tracking automatically.
