The top 100 is a pyramid: what expanding our coverage actually showed
CryptoList Research ยท Published 20 Aug 2026
We recently doubled CryptoList's coverage from 50 coins to the top 100 โ new pages, new data, a year of AUD price history for each. The expansion produced something we didn't expect to be the headline: a precise picture of how lopsided this market really is. The numbers below are computed from our own market records; they refresh daily, but the shape they describe barely moves.
Ninety-three cents of every dollar
Add up our entire top 100 and you get about A$3.1 trillion. Now the pyramid: Bitcoin alone is A$1.85 trillion โ 59% of everything. The top ten coins together hold A$2.9 trillion, or 93%. And the bottom fifty coins โ the entire second half of the top 100, each one a name serious enough to survive our curation โ share A$38 billion between them: 1.2% of the total. The market's attention is a pyramid with a very wide base of conversation and a very narrow peak of actual money.
The quiet tenth: stablecoins
Thirteen of our hundred coins are stablecoins โ tokens engineered not to move โ and together they hold about A$411 billion, roughly 13% of the top-100's value. That's the measure of crypto's plumbing: an eighth of the market exists to be boring. It's also why we exclude them from the altcoin season index โ an asset designed to stay at a dollar can't "outperform" anything. The category keeps growing because its users are businesses moving money, not investors chasing moves โ the trend our stablecoin explainer unpacks.
What the pyramid means for a buyer
Three practical readings. First, "crypto" as most people experience it is really Bitcoin plus a supporting cast โ decisions about the 59% matter more than decisions about the 1.2%. Second, the further down the pyramid you buy, the more your outcome depends on liquidity and attention rather than adoption: a coin ranked 80th can double or halve on flows that Bitcoin wouldn't notice. Third, the pyramid is the reason "cheap coin" logic fails โ a small coin reaching a big coin's price implies a market cap the pyramid has no room for. Our new market cap calculator makes that arithmetic unavoidable.
Why we still cover all 100
Because the second half of the pyramid is where Australians most need verified information โ it's where the scam-adjacent marketing concentrates, where liquidity is thinnest, and where a graveyard plot is most likely being surveyed. Every coin page now carries the same treatment: real AUD history, supply maths, and the honest context that a rank number alone doesn't give you.
