What is Cold wallet?
A crypto wallet kept offline (usually a hardware device) so hackers can't reach the keys via the internet.
A cold wallet keeps your private keys on a device that never touches the internet โ typically a purpose-built hardware wallet the size of a USB stick. Transactions are signed inside the device, so even a malware-riddled computer never sees the keys. It's the storage grade used for serious, long-term holdings.
The trade-off is friction: spending requires the device, a PIN and physical button presses, which is exactly the point. The standard pattern pairs a cold wallet for savings with a hot wallet for day-to-day amounts โ the crypto equivalent of a term deposit plus a spending account. Where people actually lose money in this decision is covered in our wallet deep-dive.

FAQ
Do I need a hardware wallet?
A common rule of thumb: once your holdings exceed what you'd carry as cash in your pocket, offline storage starts earning its ~$100โ250 price. Below that, a reputable software wallet or exchange with strong 2FA is a defensible choice.
What if my hardware wallet breaks or is lost?
Nothing is lost โ the coins live on the blockchain, not the device. Restore your seed phrase into a new device and everything reappears. The seed phrase, not the gadget, is the thing to protect.
