What is Crypto ETF?

A fund traded on the stock exchange that holds crypto for you — Bitcoin exposure in an ordinary brokerage account, with fees instead of wallets and keys.

A crypto ETF wraps coins in the most familiar package in finance: a fund listed on the stock exchange, holding the asset (or tracking it) so you can get exposure through an ordinary brokerage account — including inside super. No wallets, no keys, no exchanges; also no self-custody, and a management fee forever.

The trade-offs are clean. ETFs win on convenience, estate simplicity (your broker account passes through your will like any other holding), and access for structures like SMSFs; direct ownership wins on cost over time, actual control, and usability — you can't stake or spend an ETF unit. Tax treatment differs in mechanics though not in spirit: ETF disposals are CGT events like any share. Our ETF page compares the Australian-listed options.

FAQ

Is a Bitcoin ETF better than buying Bitcoin?

Different products for different people. The ETF suits those who value brokerage-account convenience and structures like SMSFs; direct ownership suits those who want control and lower ongoing cost. The fee compounds against the ETF; the responsibility compounds against self-custody.

Do crypto ETFs actually hold the coins?

The Australian spot ETFs hold the underlying asset with institutional custodians — check each fund's documents, because structures (spot holdings vs offshore fund wrappers) differ in ways that matter.
