What is cryptocurrency, actually?

lesson 1 of 8

Cryptocurrency is digital money that works without a bank in the middle. Instead of one company keeping the ledger of who owns what, thousands of computers around the world keep identical copies and check each other constantly. That shared ledger is called a blockchain.

Because no single company controls it, nobody can quietly print more, block your payment, or edit the history. That is the whole trick — and the reason people either love it or find it unsettling.

Bitcoin, launched in 2009, was the first. Today there are thousands of others — most of them experiments, some of them useful, many of them worthless. As a beginner you only need to understand a handful, and the next lesson starts with the one that started everything.

🎯 Key takeaways

  • Crypto is a shared ledger no single company controls
  • Legal in Australia; regulated by AUSTRAC, taxed by the ATO
  • Thousands exist; only a handful matter to a beginner
