MetaMask is the browser extension that DeFi was effectively built around: the default connection method for thousands of dApps, now spanning EVM chains plus Solana and Bitcoin support added in 2025. If you interact with on-chain applications, you will end up using it or something pretending to be it.
Ubiquity cuts both ways — MetaMask users are the most phished population in crypto. Treat it as the interface layer it is: excellent for interacting, wrong for storing. Its best configuration is paired with a hardware wallet holding the actual keys.
