Safe review (2026)
The multisig standard

Our take
Safe (formerly Gnosis Safe) is not a wallet in the consumer sense โ it is the smart-contract multisig standard that DAOs, protocols and treasuries use to require multiple signatures before funds move. Trillions of dollars of value have passed through Safe contracts.
For Australian users it matters in two cases: a business or investment club holding crypto jointly, or an individual using a 2-of-3 setup as structured self-custody where no single lost key is fatal. Setup requires real EVM literacy; the protection model is unmatched once running.

Pros & cons
Pros
- Open-source firmware โ independently auditable
- Free to use โ you only pay network fees
- Broad asset support: EVM multisig standard
Cons
- Hot wallet โ connected to the internet, so device compromise = funds at risk
- Self-custody means self-responsibility: lose the seed phrase (or access), lose the funds
How secure is Safe?
Requiring M-of-N signatures eliminates the single point of failure that defines ordinary wallets โ one compromised key moves nothing. The contracts are open source, formally audited and the industry default. Complexity is the cost: signer management, gas on every action, and the need to keep signer keys (ideally hardware) genuinely independent.
Who is Safe for?
โ Good fit ifโฆ
- A business, SMSF-adjacent structure or group holds crypto jointly
- You want no single key able to move funds
- Your signers can each manage a hardware wallet
โ Look elsewhere ifโฆ
- Youโre an individual wanting simple storage
- You hold mainly non-EVM assets
- Gas overhead on every transaction bothers you
Getting started with Safe
- 1 Download from the official site only
Get Safe via the official website or app store listing linked from it โ fake wallet apps and lookalike sites are the #1 way people lose funds on day one.
- 2 Create the wallet and secure access
Write the recovery phrase by hand and store it offline. Never screenshot it, never type it into a website โ no legitimate service will ever ask.
- 3 Test with a small amount
Send a little crypto in, then back out. Only after the round trip works should meaningful funds follow.
- 4 Keep hot balances small
A software wallet is for using, not storing. Pair it with a hardware wallet and let this be the spending account, not the vault.
